Emmanuel Cooper's life has an "ex" through it: ex-soldier, ex-detective sergeant, and ex-white man. All of that changes when he discovers the body of a brutally murdered young errand boy, forcing Emmanuel out of the shadows. But after two more identical murders, Emmanuel becomes the police department's prime suspect. Finding the serial killer is even more urgent than before. Malla Nunn was born in Swaziland, South Africa, and currently lives in Sydney, Australia. She is a filmmaker with three award-winning films to her credit, as well as the author of the Emmanuel Cooper crime series, When the Ground Is Hard, and Sugar Town Queens.
