Before emerging as a vibrant suburb of the nation's capital in the early 20th century, Arlington was the agricultural center of Alexandria County.
Global notice came after the creation and expansion of Arlington National Cemetery, the Pentagon and Fort Myer, site of the first airplane casualty on September 17, 1908. Add in some modern marquee employers--PBS, WETA, Nestle, the Foreign Service Institute and Amazon--and it's a recipe for accelerating change. Unsurprisingly, residents are increasingly at odds over rising housing costs and demolitions of long-valued homes and businesses. And a key to preserving Arlington's character is a deeper knowledge of history.

Author Biography
Charlie Clark is a longtime journalist in the Washington, D.C. area who writes the weekly "Our Man in Arlington" column for the Falls Church News-Press. He has written Arlington County Chronicles and Hidden History of Arlington County, both published by The History Press. His biography of George Washington Parke Custis is due in 2021 from McFarland Books. He previously has worked as an editor or writer for the Washington Post, Congressional Quarterly, National Journal, Time-Life Books, Tax Analysts and the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges.
