Class is in session. The students weigh a thousand pounds.
Every winter, Grandpa paddles out to the warm Florida springs to meet his favorite students. He knows them by name. He knows their habits and their tricks. And this year, his granddaughter Emily is coming along for the first time.
As the morning mist lifts, the gentle giants begin to gather. Five become ten. Ten become twenty. Manatee School is in session.
Told in lilting, read-aloud rhyme, Manatee School is an unforgettable adventure for young animal lovers. Children will meet Sophie, who loves to body surf; Mike, who is always hungry; shy Sherilyn; and the irrepressible Quackenbush, who can squeal. As Grandpa teaches the manatees to stay safe from boats and fishing lines and cold water, Emily discovers that the greatest lessons often come from the most surprising teachers.
Perfect for read-aloud time, classroom sharing, and gift-giving. Inspired by real volunteer manatee monitors at Blue Spring State Park in Florida, author Debbie Burton brings accuracy and heart to every page. Illustrator Bennett Longmire's vibrant artwork captures the beauty of Florida's natural springs in gorgeous full color.
