For over a century, socialism has promised liberation and delivered collapse - yet each generation is told the last attempt simply wasn't done correctly. In this first volume of the Maximum Freedom series, U.S. Air Force veteran and entrepreneur Robert Krueger dismantles that excuse, tracing socialism's structural pattern of failure from the Russian famine and the Soviet collapse to Venezuela's economic ruin, and exposing National Socialism as a variant of the same left-wing playbook rather than its opposite.
At the center of the book is the Freedom Curve, Krueger's original framework mapping the relationship between government control and the erosion of individual liberty and prosperity - a model he uses to explain not just why command economies fail, but why every partial step toward central control moves a society down the same curve. Krueger argues that socialism functions like a parasite: it cannot generate wealth on its own, so it survives only by feeding on the capitalist host economy it claims to replace, and it dies - or turns to violence - when the host is exhausted.
The book examines why socialism's appeal keeps resurging despite its historical record, from the psychological pull it holds for young people to the institutional pipeline - education, media, and algorithmic amplification - that has accelerated its growth inside America itself. Drawing on figures from Hayek and Friedman to firsthand accounts from Soviet and North Korean defectors, Krueger builds a case that is historical, economic, and personal.
Written for readers across the political spectrum who sense something has shifted in American political life but aren't sure how to name it, The Tick is both a warning and a roadmap - a call to understand, defend, and restore the founding principles that made prosperity possible in the first place. It is the foundational volume of a series arguing that freedom, once lost, is far harder to reclaim than to preserve.
