Lovejoy was a Presbyterian minister, journalist, and committed abolitionist who was murdered by a pro-slavery mob in 1837. His brother, Owen Lovejoy, was also an outspoken critic of slavery and went on to become a key figure in the Republican Party during the Civil War.
