A long-term neurological condition called multiple sclerosis (MS) affects the brain and spinal cord as well as the central nervous system (CNS). It is typified by the immune system inadvertently targeting myelin, the layer that protects nerve fibers. Numerous symptoms result from the disruption of the regular passage of electrical impulses along the neurons caused by damage to the myelin sheath.
