The story was inspired by the author's own wife who suffers from Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). She had her life saved by a friend and co-worker who donated her kidney to the author's wife 4 years ago. The main character was inspired by the kidney they received who they affectionately dubbed "Oscar.
