The Bible is the most important book in the world. It forms the basis of the major religions, and it influences billions of people. Readers find comfort and consolation here. Communities use it as a guide for thinking and life. It deals with the meaning of life, God, history, and the afterlife. The Bible also presents texts about war, child sacrifice, and mass murder. Some readers pass over such texts in silence. Interestingly, the Bible is aware of the provocation such texts create, and it is not passive about them. It presents alternatives, counter-texts, and comments. New revelations handle earlier notions and steer theology in more fruitful directions. This book presents the Bible's way of doing this. All texts are inspired by God, original revelations, new revelations, and the mediation between them. The Bible is a wonderful collection of revelations from Moses to Jesus. It took more than one thousand years to complete the book, and the result is amazing.
Author Biography
Magnar Kartveit is Professor of Old Testament and Emeritus Professor at VID Specialized University, Norway. His doctoral dissertation at the University of Uppsala was about the land of Israel in Chronicles. He has published books on the origin of the Samaritans and on Hebrew language. From 2008 to 2016 he served as president of Société d'Études Samaritaines, and in 2009 he was visiting scholar at Yale Divinity School, New Haven, Connecticut.
