Are there alligators under New York City? Did the military take the lessons learned in the so-called "Philadelphia Experiment" of 1943 and apply the same technology at Montauk--to develop a weapon that would literally drive the enemy insane? Reading Line: Fourteen Mind-Boggling Tales from the Empire State How did one woman unknowingly infect nearly fifty people with a deadly disease, killing three? In the early twentieth century, when the science of bacteriology was in its nascent phase, a dogged private investigator tracked down this first known case of a healthy typhoid fever carrier, aka "Typhoid Mary". In 1977, a visitor to Lake Champlain snapped a picture of a serpent-like creature whose head and neck alone emerged eight feet above the surface of the water. Had someone finally captured the famous lake monster, Champ, on film? Or had she simply sighted a giant lake sturgeon, or one of the earth's last surviving dinosaurs...or something else? In June of 1904, over 1,000 passengers on board the General Slocum--most of them children--died from either the fire on the ship or drowning in the East River. Was the tragedy the result of rotted fire hoses and life vests filled with crumbling cork and iron weights? Or was the captain at fault for dismissing the initial fire report? From alligators under New York City to the itinerant Leather Man, New York Myths and Legends makes history fun and pulls back the curtain on some of the Empire State's most fascinating stories.
