Additional information
by Ray L. Avery (Author)
This paper discusses the 23rd Infantry's operations in the Meuse-Argonne offensive. The author gives the lessons learned for October and November. These include the importance of surprise (as evident by the enemy in seeing new troops unexpectedly), cohesion (as a well trained and disciplined unit), the undesirability of mixing troops of different nationalities, provisions, and a necessity for a clear understanding of boundaries. There are two maps included in the document which show the operations of the 23rd Division for the range of dates listed above.
