The legacy of a toxic childhood is easy to recognize but difficult to internalize and overcome. Parents leave emotional seeds in their children. In some families, these are of respect, love, and independence, but in others, they are of fear, guilt, and self-punishment. If there is some identification with the second group, there is a lack of understanding the harmful legacy of parents and committing to change the harmful thoughts they have marked, letting go of the negative emotions that govern life and recognizing that, as long as the vines of childhood are released, a self-destructive cycle will be experienced.
All emotionally healthy parents make mistakes; the problem is when they do it intentionally and repetitively. Children of toxic parents tend to associate love with suffering, to fall into dependent relationships, to live with guilt and, most importantly, to repeat the destructive patterns they suffered in their childhood.
