Palatable, Profitable, and Dying Inside examines what happens when high performers learn that professional success depends on becoming easier to accept, reward, and keep around. Jackie Roby calls this pattern palatability: diluting your opinions, needs, ambitions, and presence so others stay comfortable, even at the cost of what you really think. The pattern often forms in response to real workplace conditions.
Blending lived experience, leadership analysis, research, and client work, Roby shows how palatability can look like professionalism, reliability, and flexibility while creating overwork, self-silencing, burnout, weakened self-trust, and emotional withdrawal.
The cost is organizational, too. When employees learn that agreement is safer than candor, leaders lose access to challenge, perspective, foresight, and whole-business thinking. Teams may still perform while contributing less than they're capable of, weakening decision-making, innovation, and retention.
Through the Contribution Received Framework, the Don't Make Waves Spiral, and the Fulfillment Formula(TM), Roby gives readers language and practical tools to recognize the pattern, regulate under pressure, make clearer decisions, reclaim energy, and lead without disappearing.
For high-performing professionals, executives, and leaders responsible for workplace culture, engagement, and talent, this book reframes success around contribution, authority, psychological safety, and secure fulfillment.
