Sometimes you have to look back to where you started to figure out where you are.
Follow Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Daniel Byrd in the sixth installment of the Daniel Byrd Adventures series. The series is Southern thrillers wrapped in a police procedural.
In this novel, the agent must reexamine his roots when personal regrets overwhelm him. GBI Special Agent in Charge Daniel Byrd calls on an old friend to listen as he recounts a particularly traumatic case from his earliest time with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Byrd has recently graduated from the GBI Basic Agents Class and has been assigned to the Douglas, Georgia, office. In 1995, in rural Pearson, Georgia, Byrd is learning the ropes as a criminal investigator. He makes new friends along the way and develops the characteristics that will help him survive as a law enforcement officer in sparsely populated South Georgia.
But too soon, the rookie agent is called to help search for a missing deputy sheriff and his young ride-along. As the investigation develops, Byrd is thrust into an investigation and manhunt in the Southeastern Georgia swamps.
Running on empty for days at a time, Byrd and an ever-growing force of state and local officers must face a monumental test of their commitment. Grueling terrain and temperatures
compound the law enforcement officers' struggles. And Byrd must face his own insecurities as each day brings greater danger and greater challenges.
Byrd must finally reconcile the job he chose versus the price he paid to serve.
