In 1978 he was awarded the Gold Medal in Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and in 1993 the PEN\/Malamud Award for his lifetime contribution to the art of the short story. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cb\u003eAnn Beattie\u003c\/b\u003e, editor, is the author of nine novels and eleven short story collections.
