Taking into account the geo-political contexts in the African English-speaking countries or the former British colonies, this thought-provoking text identifies and discusses the means of applying generally accepted historical and contemporary principles of police administration. The book is based on critical reviews of the African and foreign literature in criminology, law enforcement, legal anthropology, and public administration. and is an essential element in the ongoing efforts to produce knowledge in the theory and practice of African criminology. It proposes and explores a paradigm shift in the methods of the field of police administration by employing a hybrid use of African vernacular and foreign forms of research findings and practice that are similar to ideas promoted by Julius Nyerere, Nelson Mandela, and famous African musicians and novelists. This second edition of the book revisits the themes and issues of the first edition, as it identifies new ideas that will enhance the stature and utility of the book. It seeks to identify the specific tasks for different stakeholders in African police administration. These stakeholders include the community of scholars, policy makers and administrators, and members of the international community.
Author Biography
Ejakait (J.S.E.) Opolot is a professor in the Department of Administration of Justice in the Barbara Jordan/Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University. Earning his BA, MA, and Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University, he is also the author of An Introduction to Private Security: A Comparative Introduction to an International Phenomenon.
