Power of Story is a call to reclaim narrative, rebuild hope, and restore civic health in communities that have spent generations being defined by others.
Drawing from research in Psychology, Economics, journalism, education, and community development, Power of Story explores a profound but often overlooked truth: the stories communities hear about themselves shape what they believe is possible, and what they believe is possible shapes their future.
Centered in Appalachia but applicable far beyond it, Power of Story examines how negative stereotypes, media framing, and decades of narrative stereotypes have influenced identity, participation, economic outcomes, and collective hope, demonstrating that narrative is not "soft" work; it is infrastructure.
Blending research, lived experience, civic strategy, and practical frameworks, this book introduces readers to the Hope Forward model,
a place-based approach that uses storytelling, local journalism, youth engagement, and measurable hope-building strategies to strengthen communities from within.
At a time when local newsrooms across the country are disappearing, civic trust is declining, and entire regions are being reduced to stereotypes, Power of Story offers something increasingly rare: a roadmap for reclaiming voice, rebuilding agency, and helping communities see themselves more fully and truthfully.
Because when people reclaim authorship over who they are, they begin reclaiming power over what comes next.
This. Is. Everything.
