The Revolution was won in South Carolina. These are the battles history forgot.
You know the names Bunker Hill, Trenton, and Yorktown. But what about Miller's Bridge, Quinby Bridge, or Tar Bluff? If you have ever driven through the Charleston Lowcountry and wondered what stories the land beneath your feet is hiding, you are not alone. For generations, the critical contributions of South Carolina's revolutionary patriots have been overshadowed by northern battlefields and the historians who chronicled them. The skirmishes, encampments, and desperate fights that helped turn the tide of the entire war have been almost forgotten.
Revolutionary Lowcountry: The Almost Forgotten by Phillip Davis, MD changes that. Arriving in America's 250th year, this richly illustrated volume uncovers seven gripping narratives from the coastal plains and waterways around Charleston. Drawing on firsthand accounts written by the soldiers themselves, enhanced by period maps, original plats, LiDAR imagery, and portraits of key figures, Davis immerses you in an era when speed was measured by a horse's gallop and the idea of government by the people had to be won on the battlefield. Several of these sites were unidentified until recent years, and new information is presented here for the first time.
Inside you will discover:
- Seven lesser known Revolutionary War sites in the SC Lowcountry, brought to life through vivid primary sources and stunning visuals
- The untold stories of patriot soldiers, from Francis Marion's militia campaigns to the final actions before the British evacuation of Charlestown in 1782
- A fresh appreciation for South Carolina's pivotal, yet long overlooked, role in winning American independence
An essential companion for history lovers, battlefield explorers, and anyone who believes these stories deserve to be remembered.
