In the 1960s, when most American households had a TV, people got much of their news from one of a few nightly programs. Many people also read a daily newspaper, which covered major local, national, and global events. But in modern times, individuals can choose from dozens of television channels and online shows, thousands of websites and digital newspapers, and millions of social media posts claiming to be the most accurate news reporting of the day. And artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the way news is reported even more.
AI is changing content creation, distribution, and consumption of current events. More than 75 percent of newsrooms worldwide rely on AI. AI tools can improve efficiency, speeding up the distribution of information. AI-based apps and programs can quickly translate languages, transcribe texts, suggest articles to read based on user preferences, and even write news content. But there are concerns about the technology's accuracy, fairness, and transparency. As the news industry seeks balance between AI-led and human-led news reporting, experts continue to explore the technology's many benefits while examining the concerns that surround it. One thing is for certain: Responsible AI use must start where news has always started--with people.
