Accelerometers are everywhere, from smartphones and wearables to automotive systems and industrial equipment. Yet despite their widespread use, their behavior, specifications, and practical limitations are often misunderstood.
Sensor Foundations Series: Accelerometers provides a clear and structured introduction to accelerometers, focusing on how they work, what they measure, and how their output is used in real systems. It explains how motion, vibration, and tilt are converted into useful electrical signals, and how modern MEMS accelerometers achieve compact size, low power consumption, and broad application range. The book progresses from fundamental concepts to practical engineering insight. Key specifications such as sensitivity, noise, bandwidth, output data rate, full-scale range, and power modes are explained in a way that helps readers build real intuition rather than simply memorize terminology. The discussion then extends to datasheet interpretation, application examples, part selection, and common mistakes to avoid. Applications covered include smartphones, wearables, drones, automotive systems, medical devices, and IoT products. The book also includes a practical guide to reading accelerometer datasheets and understanding the trade-offs that matter when evaluating or comparing sensor solutions. Clear figures and diagrams are included throughout to support understanding and reinforce the key concepts. Written by Jay Esfandyari, Ph.D., an engineer with hands-on experience in the sensor industry, this book is intended for engineers, technical professionals, and analysts who want a solid, practical understanding of accelerometers without diving into unnecessarily heavy mathematics. It is equally useful for readers building technical intuition, evaluating sensor technologies, or strengthening their understanding of motion-sensing systems. Sensor Foundations Series is a growing collection of books, each focused on a different sensor type and written to make complex topics more accessible without sacrificing technical clarity.
