SOLDIER GIRL
By Gemma Gardner
She joined the Army at seventeen.
She served for fifteen years.
Leaving was the hardest battle of all.
Soldier Girl is a powerful and honest memoir of service, leadership, motherhood, and transition. Growing up in Salford, Gemma Gardner found structure, belonging, and purpose in the British Army, building a career that spanned operational tours in Northern Ireland, Belize, Bosnia, Germany, and Afghanistan.
As one of the first women to train alongside infantry soldiers, she navigated the unspoken realities of a man's Army while learning how to lead under pressure. Alongside military service came family life - raising children during deployments, relying on parents who stepped in without question, and building a marriage grounded in quiet strength and shared sacrifice.
When injury and medical discharge bring her career to an abrupt end, the loss of uniform is followed by something deeper: the loss of identity. Stripped of rank, routine, and belonging, Soldier Girl explores the often-unspoken reality of military transition - the silence, grief, and work of rebuilding life after service.
This is not a story of medals or heroics.
It is a story of endurance, integrity, and becoming.
Written with honesty and reflection, Soldier Girl is for anyone who has served, loved someone who served, or faced the challenge of redefining who they are when life changes everything.
