Many children struggle with negative self talk. As a parent, it can be really tempting to respond by offering your child reassurance, or by directly contradicting the negative statements. However, we can't always be there to help our children recognize and respond to negative thoughts, and sometimes negative self talk can become compounded with feelings of guilt and anger due to an inability to respond appropriately when negative thoughts are occurring. That's why it's so important to provide young children with tools to recognize and respond to negative thoughts about themselves and their abilities.
Sometimes My Brain is Mean to Me is based on principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Using this book, children can begin to address self-directed negative thoughts by recognizing, questioning, and ultimately changing negative thoughts they may have about themselves. Most importantly, the purpose of this book is to destigmatize self-directed negative thinking so that children can realize that they're not alone. Everyone experiences self-directed negative thoughts sometimes. Being aware and prepared when negative thoughts start can make all the difference between being in control of your thoughts or controlled by your thoughts.
