Josh Spodek disconnected his Manhattan apartment from the electric grid in May 2022. He didn't know how he'd last more than a day. He learned by doing and he's still going.
He didn't ask permission or wait for institutional aid, though he had practiced unplugging appliances and bought a used solar panel from Craigslist, hoping it would help. Then he simply flipped the circuit and solved challenges as they came. He soon found, to his surprise, his quality of life improving.
Now, through his courses and podcast, he leads people to live more sustainably, including teaching others who teach others, and so on. His solutions are visionary and practical: he and his teams actually practice them. They wish they'd started earlier and don't want to go back. They are creating a bottom-up and top-down movement that grows organically, leading governments and corporations instead of waiting for them.
He disdains lecturing, convincing, and coercing, which creates resistance. He shows how to inspire with intrinsic motivation, which creates meaning, gratitude, and effective action.
