Crown Prince Aaron deDraconis is stunned to discover that a son will bear a blue sword because the last was associated with a traitor to the House.
Years later, King Aaron's four sons train to occupy their royal roles. Crown Prince Artos doubts whether he wants to assume the throne, take on its myriad responsibilities, and be betrothed. Younger brother Bortis trains to protect the House as a warrior and right hand to the crown prince, but struggles with self-doubt and his ability to wield his sword at will.
