Turn a Ruger 10/22 Into a Precision Rimfire Competitor - on a Budget
The Ruger 10/22 is the most popular .22 LR semi-automatic rifle ever made. More than seven million have been sold since 1964, and no other rimfire platform comes close to matching its aftermarket support. But can a fifty-year-old carbine - the kind you might have bought at JCPenney for sixty-nine dollars - be transformed into a legitimate NRL22 competitor? The Budget 22LR Build: A Guide to Precision Rimfire - The Ruger 10/22 is the complete, hands-on guide to building a competition-grade precision rimfire rifle from a standard 10/22 without spending a small fortune. Written by a former law enforcement officer, certified NRA firearms instructor, and amateur home gunsmith with over forty years of personal gunsmithing experience, this book takes you through every stage of the build - research, parts selection, installation, testing, tuning, and competition preparation. This fully expanded Second Edition includes:- Complete build walkthrough - barrel replacement, MDT AAC Premier Gen2 chassis installation, trigger work, optics mounting, bolt and magazine upgrades, bipod setup, and receiver modification for breech-end cleaning
- Full torque specification table - every fastener in the build with inch-pound values, thread locker guidance, and installation notes
- MDT AAC Premier Gen2 chassis installation - complete step-by-step procedure covering parts inventory, yoke assembly, action seating, torque sequence, free-float verification, LOP and cheek riser adjustment, and final function check
- Trigger system deep dive - fire control architecture explained from first principles; complete step-by-step trigger job procedure (polishing, hammer geometry stoning, test-reassemble-retest cycles); and a buyer's guide to drop-in replacements from Volquartsen, Kidd, and TandemKross
- Barrel harmonics, tuners, and bore lapping - how barrel vibration affects accuracy, free-float verification, barrel tuner adjustment protocol, and a full bore lapping walkthrough
- Ammunition selection and advanced testing - chronograph methodology, standard deviation and extreme spread interpretation, head-to-head results from Eley, SK, CCI Green Tag, Lapua, and Norma loads at 25, 50, 100, and 200 yards
- In-depth .22LR ballistics - the heeled bullet design explained, velocity windows (subsonic, standard, hypervelocity), transonic instability, RA-4 vs. G-1 drag models, and real-world wind/temperature/altitude sensitivity data
- Cleaning methodology - full disassembly and cleaning procedure for barrel, receiver, bolt, trigger group, and magazines; optimal fouling management for precision shooting
- DOPE charts and ballistics apps - MOA vs. MIL explained, scope adjustment mechanics, Strelok/Chairgun/AB Quantum compared, and how to build and validate a DOPE card
- NRL22 competition guide - match formats, course of fire, positional shooting, stage planning, time management, and the mental game
- Comprehensive glossary - 100+ technical terms defined in context
- Equipment reviews - candid assessments of every major component: MDT, TandemKross, Shaw Barrels, and Discovery Optics
The author also shoots what he builds. Every ammunition recommendation is backed by actual chronograph data and group measurements from this specific rifle. Every component rating reflects real installation experience. If something worked, you will know why. If something disappointed, the author says so.
