by Paul Davies (Author)
In this definitive study of Nazi medical killing, Paul Davies reconstructs the system that transformed German medicine into an instrument of destruction. The Doctors of Death traces the ideological origins of euthanasia, the architecture of the killing centres, the bureaucratic machinery that sustained them, and the careers of the physicians who built, operated, and legitimised the programme.
Beginning with the rise of racial hygiene and the medicalisation of hereditary theory, the book follows the line of continuity from sterilisation courts to Aktion T4, showing how clinical judgment, administrative routine, and ideological conviction fused into a single system. Davies examines the six killing centres - Grafeneck, Brandenburg, Hartheim, Sonnenstein, Bernburg, and Hadamar - not as isolated sites but as a coordinated network, each contributing to a unified method of selection, transport, killing, and concealment.
The narrative exposes the quiet killings that continued after the official end of T4 in 1941, the destruction of disabled children under the Reich Committee, and the traffic in human specimens that supplied neuropathologists such as Julius Hallervorden and Hugo Spatz. It follows the transfer of T4 personnel into Operation Reinhard, revealing how techniques of medical killing were carried directly into the extermination camps of the General Government.
At the centre of the book are the doctors themselves. Paul Davies provides concise, forensic portraits of more than fifty physicians whose careers intersected with every stage of the programme: paediatricians like Werner Catel and Ernst Wentzler; institution directors such as Hans Heinze, Valentin Faltlhauser, and Heinrich Gross; killing-centre doctors including Irmfried Eberl, Friedrich Mennecke, Georg Renno, and Alfons Klein; administrators like Viktor Brack and Werner Heyde; and the scientific figures who turned victims into specimens - Hallervorden, Spatz, de Crinis, Schneider, Villinger, and many others. Their biographies reveal a profession that aligned itself with ideology, bureaucracy, and state violence, erasing the boundary between treatment and destruction.
The book concludes with the Doctors' Trial at Nuremberg, the post-war rehabilitation of many perpetrators, and the long silence that followed - a silence that allowed careers to continue, reputations to be rebuilt, and responsibility to be obscured.
Written with documentary precision and uncompromising clarity, The Doctors of Death is a study of how a modern medical profession became an engine of annihilation. It is a work of history, a warning about the fragility of ethics, and a record of the physicians who shaped one of the most disturbing chapters in the history of medicine.
