The exploiter causes us to consider two conflicting values in our society - assertive initiative and honesty. We place a high premium on the clever person who has the energy to put his ideas into action and to succeed in our competitive world. However, a person must not cheat, lie, or hurt others. To exploit others, to deceive and manipulate, to trick with shrewd and clever tactics is surely a basic illness of modern society. The lie, the distortionof reality, is clearly one of the most pervasive evils of our time.
