For fans of Elle Cosimano, Maria Semple, and the brainy, socially barbed humor of Lessons in Chemistry, The Girlfriend Guide to Negligent Homicide is a wickedly funny literary mystery about law, loyalty, female complicity, and the stories communities choose to believe.
When a beloved Wisconsin brewmaster drops dead hours after marrying a mysterious nineteen-year-old foodstagrammer, Jaycee Grayson sees the story forming before anyone bothers with the facts.
The bride is Mennonite and camera shy. Her meat sticks are internet-famous. Nobody can say who's sampled what, but folks have quite the appetite for more.
Jaycee is a former entertainment executive still recovering from the wreckage of #MeToo Hollywood-and a shaky reinvention attempt in Littleburgh, Wisconsin-who figures she can dodge yet another scandal.
She figures wrong.
A snap decision to protect the young widow soon casts Jaycee as prime accomplice, sketchy business partner, and amateur sleuth in a case where the corpse refuses to stay put and the headlines arrive before the facts become inconvenient.
As a surprise spring blizzard traps the state capital in the final stretch of a tense election weekend, public outrage, legal jeopardy, and the dangerous business of Midwest artisanal snack foods back Jaycee into a cold reality: expose the truth to save her own skin, or protect an ambitious young chef all too willing to take the fall.
Sharp, observant, and darkly hilarious, The Girlfriend Guide to Negligent Homicide blends women's sleuth mystery, satirical small-town crime, and literary social comedy for readers who like their mysteries smart, funny, morally complicated, and served with a generous side of bite.
