The Hauton Timorumenos: Or Self-Tormentor, Of Terence (1880) is a play written by the ancient Roman playwright Terentius Publius. The play, also known as The Self-Tormentor, follows the story of a young man named Clinia who is in love with a woman named Antiphila. However, Clinia's father disapproves of the relationship and forbids him from seeing her. Clinia's friend, Menedemus, offers to help him by pretending to be his father and convincing Clinia's father to allow the relationship. However, Menedemus becomes so involved in the deception that he begins to neglect his own family, causing his wife and son to suffer. The play explores themes of love, family, and the consequences of deception. The Hauton Timorumenos is considered one of Terentius Publius' most popular and enduring works, and has been translated into numerous languages over the centuries.
