"It's all vibrations, man." For fifty years that line got filed under stoner philosophy. What if it was a real statement about the nature of reality? And of consciousness?
In The Hippies Were Right! About Consciousness and Everything Else, philosopher and activist Tam Hunt traces an unlikely arc - from a back-to-the-land childhood in a 1980s commune, through a career in law and the philosophy of mind, to a surprising conclusion: some of the counterculture's wildest hunches about consciousness, vibration, and love are landing squarely on the frontiers of modern physics and neuroscience.Drawing on his own theory, the General Resonance Theory of consciousness, Hunt shows that the hippie intuition - that reality hums, that everything is resonance - points straight at the deepest question in brain science: what consciousness actually is, and whether your brain waves might literally be you. Part memoir, part scientific detective story, part cultural reckoning, the book follows psychedelics, Eastern philosophy, the peace movement, and hard-nosed neuroscience as they converge on one radical idea - that consciousness isn't a leftover the universe coughs up, but something woven into its fabric. It's there, at the beginning. Vibrating, humming, feeling. And evolving, eventually, into you and me.
