Four princes, Artos, Bortis, Carimus, and Duka, fled their home, on the run from Abominations that want their family dead. However, only three reached the safety of Rainbow Valley, and now they must split up.
Artos stays behind to train and prepare to retake Castle Draconis, grappling with what it will mean to rule. Bortis must bargain with the enigmatic bandit known as the West Wind for a guide, even though the West Wind dislikes humans and has personal reasons to hate the royal family. Meanwhile, Carimus must set aside his preconceived notions of the world to train with the mysterious Angellar, his only hope of locating his missing brother, Duka.
All three brothers will be tested in ways they could never expect, but their greatest trial still lies ahead. Before they can reach Castle Draconis, they must first navigate the ancient armory Starstone Tower, to find the secret entrance where a long-forgotten enemy awaits them.
