by Langdon Warner (Author)
"The Long Old Road in China" is a compelling firsthand account of Langdon Warner's 1923 expedition into the rugged landscapes of Northwest China and Central Asia. As a distinguished archaeologist and art historian, Warner recounts his perilous journey along the ancient Silk Road, documenting his efforts to locate and study the legendary Buddhist cave temples of Dunhuang. This work provides a vivid exploration of the Gobi Desert and the forgotten ruins of Edzina, capturing the challenges of travel across desolate terrains and the thrill of historical discovery.
Through Warner's detailed narrative, readers are introduced to the magnificent art and architecture of early Chinese dynasties. The text delves into the intricacies of Buddhist iconography and the preservation of sacred murals, while also reflecting on the cultural and political climate of early 20th-century China. More than a simple travelogue, "The Long Old Road in China" stands as a significant record of Western archaeological interest in the East during a pivotal era of discovery. It offers invaluable insights for those interested in Asian history, the evolution of archaeological practices, and the enduring legacy of the Silk Road's artistic heritage.
