What unseen forces shape thought, emotion, instinct, and behavior?
In The Machinery of the Mind, Violet M. Firth offers an accessible introduction to the structure and operation of the human psyche. Drawing upon the emerging psychological theories of her time, she examines consciousness, the unconscious mind, instinct, memory, repression, dreams, suggestion, and the formation of personality. Her explanations translate complex ideas into practical language for readers seeking greater insight into their own mental processes.
Featuring a foreword by pioneering psychologist and ecologist A. G. Tansley, this foundational work reveals the psychological roots of Firth's later writings as Dion Fortune. Both a historical introduction to early twentieth-century psychology and a practical guide to self-understanding, The Machinery of the Mind remains a fascinating study of the forces that influence human thought and conduct.
