Adam has a mystery for the team: a leather portfolio containing twelve famous villanelles, written in the 16th century by French poet Jacque de Boissy, has been stolen from Adam's father's library just as the poems were about to be donated to the Tri-Faith Center for the Study of the Abrahamic Religions.
Amazingly, the portfolio is abandoned in Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, then returned to the Suleimans. The poems are unharmed, but something has been removed from the portfolio's secret pocket - something Adam and his father hadn't even known was there. What was taken? And who was the thief?
