Some weapons are chosen with care. Some are forged in fear. And some are drawn from a more mysterious quiver.
Step into mysteries that demand courage, discernment, and the will to seek the truth. Conceived and co-written by the daughter of Robert Arthur - the creator of the Three Investigators universe - this restoration of the classic series takes its iconic characters into a new age, with gripping contemporary adventures for young readers who crave meaning, want to share in the growth of characters they admire, and seek a world they can return to again and again.
In the seventeenth book of a 26-book story arc, The Three Investigators head to Dubois, Wyoming, for a working vacation at the Double Fork Ranch - but what awaits them is anything but restful. A rare white bison calf is stolen, a cold case on the Wind River Indian Reservation is reopened, and the vast mountain landscape becomes a stage for rustlers, secrets, and survival.
Years ago, three masked men robbed the Shoshone Rose Casino, killing a cashier before disappearing into the night. Now, a cold case unit led by Rory Carson is trying to solve the mystery - and the boys' vacation is interrupted when five black-masked rustlers strike Reese Carson's ranch. In the mountains, the Investigators - along with Reese, his daughter River, and ranch hand Eino - race on horseback after them, only to be separated by a freak accident. Soon the masked men capture Pete, Mallory, and Eino and take off for the high country. The white bison calf is nowhere to be found.
At the Double Fork, Jupiter and Bob trace clues from the casino to the ranch to an eerie connection between the two crimes. Meanwhile, Pete, Mallory, and Eino are left in an isolated part of the wilderness called Moosekill and left without food, shelter, or a way to call for help. The rustlers have vanished into the trees.
Who are the men behind the masks- and why does one never speak? How do they plan to smuggle a bison out of the mountains? And what do the odd metal contraptions on the horses' hooves mean?
Part Western, part wilderness survival story, and part cold-case mystery, this high-stakes adventure sends the Investigators deep into the heart of the Wind River Range - where the truth lies hidden among the pines, and arrows fly before dawn.
