The first time I dreamed of the ruby, I woke with blood on my pillow and fire in my lungs.
I am a soldier of Roanfire. Fierce enough to hold my own on any battlefield, loyal enough to die for the people beside me, and foolish enough to keep believing in the ones who've already given up on themselves.
But none of that prepared me for what comes in the dark. Every night the same dream pulls me under. Fire, screaming, and a ruby calling me by a name that claims me.
It wants everything. My strength. My name. My people.
Every friend I trust, every person I let close, becomes a target. I can't protect them if I stay. But without them, I am already ash.
If the ruby wins, Roanfire burns. Not in war. In something far worse - a queen who has forgotten what life is worth.
So I fight. Not for myself.
For them.

Author Biography
CK Miller spent most of her childhood roaming the countryside of Germany and playing in the medieval ruins hidden in the hills near the small village where she lived. At age 7 she was immersed in German schools where she fell in love with the rich medieval history and vivid folklore. Upon returning to America at the age of 14, German had become her first language. Feeling a bit homesick (and struggling with her English), she began to write, and has been writing ever since. When she is not writing or drawing, she can be found working in the garden or studying martial arts and natural medicine. She and her husband share their home near the Colorado Rocky Mountains with three beautiful boys.
