Without drawing on scientific findings, the Scriptural evidence for the length of creation days (yom) shows that assuming a 24-hour creation day results in multiple contradictions with Genesis Scripture and it is not supported by Scriptural information on duration of creation days. Creation days that are long periods avoid these contradictions with Scripture and are supported by Scriptural information on duration of creation days. Author Jim Pirkle, MD, PhD, further describes how review of Biblical Hebrew finds that the Scriptural order of the creation of the earth, sun, moon and stars agrees with our scientific understanding.
Using only the authority of Scripture, Dr. Pirkle finds that assuming a 24-hour creation day results in at least three contradictions with Genesis Scripture. As a result, assuming a 24-hour creation day does not support the authority of Scripture. Creation days that are long periods of time remove these Scripture contradictions. Further, the time required for specific events in the creation story supports a long period of time for creation days - not a 24-hour period.
The Timing of Biblical Creation further explores how the Biblical Hebrew describes the order of creation of the earth, sun, moon and stars that is both internally consistent across Genesis and Job and agrees with our scientific understanding. Dr. Pirkle also examines what the creation account tells us about the timing of the origin of the universe, solely relying on the Scriptural text. He concludes that while the Scripture supports creation days that are long time periods and a beginning of the universe, it does not specify a time that God created the universe.
