In a world where stories shape reality, even a single word can become a weapon. Mike Carey (Lucifer) and Peter Gross (The Books of Magic) deepen their acclaimed literary fantasy with a meditation on myth, authorship, and the power structures behind narrative itself. This compendium explores the point where imagination fractures--and where its consequences spill into the real world.
The second Unwritten Compendium unfolds a sprawling, genre-bending confrontation between stories and the forces that seek to control them. As Tom Taylor's journey grows more turbulent, the boundaries between fiction and history distort, revealing a world where legends, literature, and collective memory can be twisted by those who understand their power. Carey and Gross expand their universe with sweeping narrative ambition, moving fluidly from ancient myth to modern upheaval as the foundations of storytelling begin to crack. Armed with a strange map that charts locations where fiction impacts reality, Tom and his companions must travel the world to protect themselves and discover the truth behind his origins. Along the way, they encounter an Aussie detective by the name of Didge Patterson investigating a string of occult disappearances and a world of Fables, where denizens of myth and legend seek help against a force of pure darkness. The Unwritten Compendium Two (of two) collects The Unwritten #31, #31.5, #32, #32.5, #33, #33.5, #34, #34.5, #35, #35.5, and #36-54, as well as The Unwritten: Apocalypse #1-12.Author Biography
Mike Carey is an acclaimed British writer known for blending genre storytelling with literary ambition. His work for Vertigo includes the landmark series Lucifer and The Unwritten, as well as runs on Hellblazer and The Sandman Universe. Outside of comics, he has written novels such as the Felix Castor series and The Girl with All the Gifts (as M.R. Carey), which was adapted into a feature film. Carey's writing is celebrated for its emotional depth, structural inventiveness, and fascination with myth, memory, and the power of stories.
Peter Gross is a veteran comics artist and storyteller best known for his collaborations with Mike Carey on Lucifer and The Unwritten. His work on Books of Magic, Lucifer, and The Unwritten helped define Vertigo's visual identity for modern fantasy--clean, expressive, and quietly experimental in its layouts and storytelling. Gross's art excels at shifting between grounded realism and surreal, story-bent worlds, making him an ideal visual architect for a series about the fabric of fiction itself.
