Van Horn populates his stories with a remarkable range of urban wildlife and probes the philosophical and religious dimensions of what it means to coexist, drawing frequently from the wisdom of three unconventional guides-wildlife ecologist Aldo Leopold, Taoist philosopher Lao Tzu, and the North American trickster figure Coyote. Gavin Van Horn is executive editor of Humans & Nature Press Books at the Center for Humans & Nature, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to explore and promote human responsibilities in relation to nature--the whole community of life. He is coeditor of City Creatures and Wildness, both also published by the University of Chicago Press, as well as two five-volume series, Kinship and Elementals.
