Chi, a plain brown bird and Kah, a pompous, white-vested crow, are used to being chased from the marketplace when they go searching for food because of their annoying calls. Enter Puht, a tiny bird with an unusually long beak from a faraway town, looking for friendship and approval. With a famine raging and most of the birds having left for better opportunities elsewhere, the three birds are thrown together and win over the traders at the local market who give them scraps of food instead of shooing them away.
As the weeks go by, Chi and Kah begin to get on each other's nerves and wonder if they are not better off being by themselves. Things come to a head, and they separate to the dismay of Puht who sees them as his friends and mentors. Is that the end of a friendship? Will they ever come back together?
