Dhalius trained all his life to join his family's mercenary company as a battlemage only to find himself assigned instead to the Defiant Host, an all-female company of hardened warriors, led by the callous and commanding Captain Lakista and made up of a diversity of Elves, Orcs, Goblins, and more. With him unable to turn down the job and the company unable to reject him, Dhalius must work to fit in, learn their ways, and avoid trouble.
But as he is trying to navigate the ranks, specialties, and skills of the warriors who make up one of the most successful and powerful mercenary companies in the land, he soon realizes he must also learn to navigate their relationships and their personalities, their desires and their passion.
Complicating matters, a dark force has risen. An undead army led by a powerful necromancer marches across the kingdom intent on toppling the throne and claiming power. All that stands in its way is the Defiant Host and its newest battlemage.
