Markus Zusak (1975) es un joven autor que vive en Sídney, Australia. Con Cartas cruzadas (Lumen, 2011), ganó uno de los premios más prestigiosos que su país dedica a la literatura juvenil. La ladrona de libros (Lumen, 2007), que se inspira en lo que sus padres vivieron en Alemania y Austria durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, recibió el Premio Michael L. Printz en 2007 y se convirtió en un fenómeno editorial en todo el mundo. Philip Ardagh, en la recensión que firmó para The Guardian, señaló «La ladrona de libros ha sido publicado como libro juvenil en algunos países y como novela para adultos en otros, pero la verdad es que deberían leerla todos.
