Urban Management is about managing cities in uncertain times. The book covers the urbanization process, the urban challenges, the benefits of cities, and the scope of urban management. The latter includes urban planning, capital investment programs, local economic development, housing, urban service delivery, public utilities, social services, general urban services, transport, and asset management. This book focuses on the general principles of urban management, particularly in developing countries. It uses the CSGG framework - institutional capacity, scope of urban management, goals of urban management, and governance - for urban management.
In this second edition, the chapters have been reorganized, revised, and expanded to include many case studies. There are new chapters on capital investment programs and asset management. The latter contains many topics on asset management, including strategic asset management, asset-light business models, maintenance principles and technologies, and the use of more recent technologies such as drones, Lidar, and satellite radar systems to monitor asset conditions and respond to emergencies.
The book will be of interest to practitioners and students in the built environment, including mayors, urban managers, urban planners, developers, lenders, insurers, architects, engineers, project managers, and other consultants, contractors, and suppliers.
