by Count Harry Lessler (Author)
"Walther Rathenau" is a profound biographical study of one of the most complex and influential figures of the early twentieth century. Written by the diplomat and diarist Count Harry Kessler, this work offers an intimate and comprehensive look at the life of Walther Rathenau-a visionary industrialist, philosopher, and the ill-fated Foreign Minister of the Weimar Republic. Kessler, who moved in the same elite circles as his subject, provides unique insights into Rathenau's dual identity as a captain of industry and a high-ranking statesman striving to rebuild Germany in the aftermath of World War I.
The book traces Rathenau's intellectual development, his pivotal contributions to the German war economy, and his controversial role in the signing of the Treaty of Rapallo. Kessler masterfully navigates the political tensions of the era, illustrating the growing shadows of extremism that eventually led to Rathenau's tragic assassination in 1922. Beyond mere political history, this biography serves as a tragic portrait of a man caught between his Jewish heritage and his profound German patriotism. "Walther Rathenau" remains an essential text for understanding the fragility of democracy and the turbulent history of modern Europe.
