Most American children barely touch the Constitution in school--and when they do, they get little more than a checklist of dates and names. Yet our freedom depends on understanding this remarkable document.
We Created a Country brings the Constitution to life for children, teaching them about the animated debates at the Constitutional Convention as well as the important compromises that emerged. The United States Constitution establishes a form of government that is completely unique in the history of the world, and it is vitally important that younger generations understand its most basic principles. We Created a Country is beautifully illustrated by Kate E. Sands and written by Tara Ross, recipient of the 2024 NSDAR Excellence in American History Children's Book Award. This resource tackles the challenge of teaching younger children about constitutional principles by dividing the Founders' discussions into 11 topics, each presented sequentially and each as its own double-page spread. Presenting the Constitution in bite-size portions will help children digest and remember more nuances than they might otherwise--equipping the next generation to understand and protect the republic they inherit.
Author Biography
Kate E. Sands is the illustrator of We Elect A President: The Story of our Electoral College (2016), She Fought Too: Stories of Revolutionary War Heroines (2019), and We Fought for Freedom: The Story of Our American Revolution (2022). Kate graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2020 with a B.A. in Mandarin and Political Science, then traveled to Taichung, Taiwan to pursue a Fulbright scholarship and further her training as a bilingual educator. Since returning to the United States, Kate loves her work as an elementary school teacher and painter.Tara Ross is nationally recognized for her expertise on the Electoral College, and she is also the host of a history blog that she has been running for more than a decade. She is the author of Why We Need the Electoral College (2019), along with multiple other books about the Electoral College. Her children's books include We Elect a President: The Story of our Electoral College (2016), She Fought Too: Stories of Revolutionary War Heroines (2019), and We Fought for Freedom: The Story of Our American Revolution (2022). She is a co-author of Under God: George Washington and the Question of Church and State (2008) (with Joseph C. Smith, Jr.). Her Prager University video, Do You Understand the Electoral College?, is Prager's most-viewed video ever, with more than 66 million views.
Tara is a retired lawyer and a former Editor-in-Chief of the Texas Review of Law & Politics. She obtained her B.A. from Rice University and her J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law. She resides in Dallas with her husband and children.
