"Compassion fatigue is a very real problem in veterinary medicine--and in any profession in which caregivers face repeated, long-term exposure to the suffering and loss of others," writes Kathleen Ayl, PsyD. "When left unaddressed, the condition can lead to career dissatisfaction, high employee turnover rates, and even substance abuse or suicide." When Helping Hurts: Compassion Fatigue in the Veterinary Profession, Revised Edition empathetically contends with this widespread struggle while offering animal care professionals resources to identify and address mental health issues in themselves and their colleagues. This revised edition shares practical guidance, self-assessment tools, and exercises to empower veterinary professionals to recognize, prevent, and overcome compassion fatigue. It features ten new chapters covering current research findings on mental health and well-being, work culture, and treating personal and professional burnout.
When Helping Hurts is unique in that it defines all aspects of veterinary compassion fatigue in caring for pets, clients, and veterinarians themselves, offering real-world examples and solutions for improving the quality of life for everyone involved. With case studies, quizzes, worksheets, and "for the trainer" discussion questions at the end of each chapter, Ayl seeks not only to prevent emotional exhaustion before it begins but also to combat the devastation that unaddressed compassion fatigue is likely to inflict once it occurs.
Designed for group or independent study, When Helping Hurts recognizes the impact of cumulative grief and traumatic stress while honoring the bond of attachment. Veterinary staff, students, faculty, and their loved ones will all benefit from this important book.
