To call it his first book would be largely incorrect. Lee has been producing books since he got his grasp of the English language, in both written and verbal forms, at a very early age. His first book, albeit bound by red ribbon taken from his grandmother's sewing kit (without her knowing), was illustrated with crayons and colored pencils.
