In advocating this, this book does not make use of arguments based on the philosophy of science; it is written by a theologian who talks to his listeners and readers, whether they are theologians or not, giving them a detailed and animated account of the many facets of his biblical-exegetical work, who tells of the pinnacles and the times of crises of German universities and their faculties of theology and who portrays the prominent figures at the interface between theology and a broader public. The topics he covers range from ancient Israel, the Enlightenment and the 19th century to the threshold of present time. In a direct retrospective, the author describes the Faculty of Theology at the University of Gottingen during the Hitler era as well as his own recollection of Karl Barth as a human being and a teacher. St. Andrews; 1979 Ehrenmitglied der Society for Old Testament Studies; Korrespondierendes Mitglied der British Academy, der Danischen, der Finnischen und der Norwegischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. 1986-92 Vizeprasident der DFG; 1994-2002 Vizeprasident bzw. Prasident der Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Gottingen.
